Meet Kim A. Thompson

Kim is a risk management expert, a social equity advocate, and a community builder

Kim is a deeply engaged community leader and an advocate for positive social change.  Currently she serves on one (very purpose driven) corporate board and four nonprofit boards. In addition, on a pro bono basis, she is currently leading an effort to bring an HBCU satellite campus to Oakland, CA. Kim welcomes opportunities to apply her decades of risk management and legal experience and her passion for community to efforts that will create a positive impact.


Kim is a retired PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP Principal (non-CPA partner). She held various roles at PwC over her 24-year career there. Most recently she was a Founding Fellow of the CEO Action for Racial Equity Fellowship, a business-led initiative to develop, promote, and scale sustainable public policies and corporate engagement strategies to advance racial equity across the United States. Immediately prior, Kim was PricewaterhouseCoopers’ Global Advisory Risk & Quality Leader. Kim also led the PwC Global Risk Management Consultations team, providing risk management advice to the

PwC Network on emerging risk issues across all of PwC’s businesses. Kim also served as the U.S. firm’s Black Inclusion Network Leader. Kim previously served as PwC’s Global Deputy General Counsel. Before that she served in PwC’s U.S. Office of the General Counsel advising the U.S. Advisory and Assurance businesses. Before joining PwC, Kim was a commercial and securities litigator with Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP.


Kim has a J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law where she was an editor of the California Law Review and Student President of Berkeley Law Foundation. She earned her B.A. in philosophy from Cornell University.


Kim currently serves as an independent board member for the Oakland Roots Sports Club, a purpose driven professional soccer club whose men’s team competes in the USL Championship League.


Kim currently also is leading an effort to bring an HBCU satellite campus to Oakland. 


Kim is also an active participant in her local community and currently serves as Chair of the Board for Legal Services for Children, and on the Executive Committee of theOakland Promise Board. In addition, she is a member of the  board of directors for both the S.H. Cowell Foundation and the Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom Center. She is also a Sustaining Member of the President’s Council of Cornell Women (PCCW). She previously served on the board of the Berkeley Law Alumni Association. Beyond the nonprofit boards on which she serves, she volunteers time and energy to regularly host nonprofit and community organizations at her home and spends much of her time

helping community members make connections.


Kim has been a featured speaker at many conferences, presentations and other

gatherings.


Kim has been recognized multiple times for her community activities and her

professional achievements. The San Francisco Business Times named Kim as one of the 150 Most Influential Women in Business. Oakland Magazine recognized Kim and her husband for their collective volunteer and philanthropic work in the magazine’s annual Best of Oakland and East Bay edition. Kim’s high school awarded her their Life Achievement Award for her professional and volunteer achievements. Kim was named California Law Review’s Alumna of the Year. Kim and her husband jointly received

Friends of Oakland Parks & Recreation’s annual Ann Woodell Community Award and they were both honorees at the Oakland Parks and Recreation Salute to Excellence and Community Spirit. Kim and her husband jointly received the Community Champion Award from Life Goes On Foundation. They were also jointly recognized by Beebe Memorial Cathedral as Living Legends for their contributions to the community. Kim also received a Powerful Women of the Bay award.

Kim and her husband were jointly honored at Oakland Parks & Recreation's 2013 Salute to Excellence and Community Spirit for our support of Oakland Parks and Recreation programs. Oakland Parks & Recreation's mission is "to expose, enlighten, empower and encourage educational excellence through recreational experiences". OPR does so by offering a wide range of recreational, leisure, cultural, educational and environmental programs and activities for Oaklanders of all ages. OPR's programs make Oakland a better place for everyone. We encourage all of friends, family and colleagues living in or near Oakland to support OPR or Friends of Oakland Parks & Recreation, and we encourage all friends, family and colleagues living elsewhere to support similar programs in their communities.

Kim and her husband were awarded the annual Ann Woodell Community Award for our support of Parks and Recreation programs in our community. They strongly believe that everyone with means to do so should invest in the kids in our communities, and programs that support the kids. While Kim was at Boalt, she was the Research and Topics Editor of the California Law Review. On April 4, 2013, Kim was honored as the California Law Review Alumna of the Year.
